Community volunteering for newcomers

There is more to feeling a sense of community than just exploring your new home; it’s important to also be engaged and get involved. One of the best ways to do this is by volunteering, attending events and joining clubs.

Canadians really appreciate it when new immigrants participate in — or at least attend — community functions and meetings. These could be anything from church gatherings to school functions to athletic events, or anything else that catches your fancy. There are lots of ways to volunteer your time and getting involved. Have you thought of volunteering at your new church or school? Coaching your child’s soccer team? Or helping out at local non-profit organizations or volunteering for a community event?

You can also get involved in local politics. While you can’t vote or run as a candidate until you’re a Canadian citizen, you can volunteer for a campaign. It is a great way to become familiar with the different parties and candidates and the issues they stand for.
