Getting started in a new job in Canada is not going to be easy, the good news is that there is great potential to succeed in the construction industry as a newcomer.  This is especially true in British Columbia where the construction association estimates there will be 15,000 unfilled construction jobs over the next few years alone due to a lack of skilled workers in the province.  So, let’s take a look at how you make sure you take advantage of this great opportunity…


Research is very important


As with starting any new job, you will need to make sure that you are fully aware of the ins and outs of the construction industry in British Columbia, and have a clear idea of which companies you are looking to apply to.  Knowing the job market well will allow you to plan where you will direct your efforts when it comes to applying for work in this industry.  Once you are able to obtain an interview for the Construction Project Management position that you want, employers are impressed by someone who’s genuinely interested in and excited about the position. Show them you did your research on the company you are applying for and know your stuff.

Making sure that your resume is in the correct format

You will need to build up a professional network in order to find your desired job in the construction industry.  This advice was given to me when I was in the process of moving to Canada, and it certainly was useful, however, I didn’t really know where to start.  Thanks to pre-arrival government programs like  The British Columbia Construction Association – Integrating Newcomers, you will be able to really get a head start on this.  You will be able to interact with experts in the construction field that will be able to point you in the right direction of where to begin your search for construction project management positions in British Columbia.

A great place to begin networking in Canada is through a Professional Immigrant Network.  These can be invaluable as they allow you to connect with many people in your industry.  They can be a very important sounding board and place to hear about what has worked for other newcomers looking for work in Canada just like you.  Connecting with relevant companies on LinkedIn can also be a very important first step.  As you’re interested in the construction industry you should start with the British Columbia Construction Association’s LinkedIn.  This lets you keep up to date on industry news and important events.
