Finally, you landed that awesome job you were chasing.  Now that you have a job in Canada, you will need to work hard to keep it and set yourself up for future success from day one.  Many jobs in Canada will require you to work a 3 to 6 month probation period.  This time is to allow your manager to get a good feel for your abilities and to see how well you fit in with the company culture.  It is vital that you put your best foot forward during this time and showcase all of your skills and abilities from day one.  Here are some tips to make sure that you are able to pass your probation and give your manager reason to provide ongoing mentorship and support.

As you start your job in Canada as a newcomer you may find the working culture to be very different to what you are used to in your home country.  This is not unusual, and many new Canadians experience this.  One of the most important things that you can do is observe the behaviour of your colleagues and try to adapt to the new environment.  Your observations should start as early as the interview stage, try to gauge what the dress code is and how formal the environment is. It won’t be easy but with the right attitude, you can do it.

These two things may seem like one and the same but sometimes you may find that you are expected to go above and beyond your usual set of tasks.  It is perfectly acceptable to ask your manager exactly what it is that they want you to do and for a timeframe that you are expected to complete it by.  Remember, you are new to the job and this is the best possible time to ask as many questions as possible.

You should try to learn as quickly as possible how your manager and colleagues prefer to communicate with their each other.  Do they like to have informal chats, large meetings, or communicate primarily over email?  You may be used to a more direct form of communication.  Canadians prefer a softer tone in professional settings.  For example, instead of sending a direct email with a one-line instruction of “This work must be completed by end of day” you will probably get something more akin to “If this work could be completed by this afternoon it would be greatly appreciated.”  Soft skills are very important for newcomers to Canada who want to integrate successfully into the workplace.

Having a clear idea of how Canadians communicate is very important to make sure that you do not fail to understand some important information or instructions in the workplace.

Equality is very important to Canadians

 

This applies to treating everyone equally in the workplace as well as being respectful to every member of a company’s hierarchy.  It will be noticed by others if you only respect those who can further your career.  Also, it never hurts to have the administrative assistants or receptionists in your corner when you need something to be done quickly.  A good rule of thumb is to always be polite and make sure that you are never condescending to anyone at work.

 

Show initiative

 

This is a big one in Canadian workplaces.  As you start your new job in Canada, you need to go the extra mile and really show that you are capable of achieving more than what is asked of you.  Once you have a reputation for being able to take charge of projects and see them through you will have secured your place as a member of the team that your manager can rely on and trust.
