Waterloo is a city in Southern Ontario, and is considered the twin city to Kitchener. In fact, there have been several attempts to amalgamate the two cities, along with the city of Cambridge, but they were unsuccessful. Residents often refer to the Waterloo city centre as “uptown,” while “downtown” is reserved for the Kitchener city centre.
The population of Waterloo sits at about 98,780, but the Waterloo region as a whole is one of Canada’s fastest growing communities, with a population of 543,700 people that is expected to reach 729,000 people by 2031. About 24 percent of the population is made up of immigrants.
