Mother with baby in car seat(NC) – Child safety seats are the best form of protection when little ones are travelling in your vehicle. Specialized seats are designed to protect and reduce injuries – as long as they are installed properly.

Correct installation is essential and it’s important for parents to learn how to do it properly. If you’re having difficulty with installation, take a look at the instructional videos that are on the Ontario Ministry of Transportation website.

“A correctly installed child safety seat greatly reduces the risk of a fatal injury in infants, toddlers, and children,” says Achiel Goossens, Senior Manager of Auto Claims with Aviva Canada. “Make sure that you follow the instructions carefully, and if you are not sure, get your child safety seat inspected.” Goossens adds that there are a number of centres across Ontario that will inspect it for free.

Common installation mistakes

There are a number of common installation mistakes that are made by parents. They include:

• Not placing the child safety seat in the right direction

• Using a defective or broken safety seat

• Using an expired child safety seat (check expiry date)

• Not using the right seat for your child’s age and size

• Not properly securing the seat and having loose harness straps.

Buying used?

If you are buying a used car seat, have it inspected. Make sure that it comes with all necessary straps and instructions for installation. Check for cracks and make sure it is not expired past its useful life date. Also, make sure that the car seat has not previously been in an automobile accident. It’s better to be safe than sorry, especially where your child’s safety is concerned.
