Halloween in Canada

Halloween is celebrated all over Canada and it is a great time of year to have fun with costumes and trick or treating. If the concept of Halloween is unfamiliar to you then don’t worry. Here’s the scoop…

What is Halloween?

It is widely believed that many Halloween traditions originated from ancient Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain. These festivals have pagan roots although nowadays the holiday is exclusively secular in nature and just a bit of fun for everyone.

What do you do on Halloween?

Halloween activities include trick-or-treating. Trick or treating is where your children dress up in a costume and knock on the doors of your neighbours and ask for candy. This is most common in suburban areas, however many condos are now putting plans in place so that those who want to give out candy can. Usually through a sign-up system so that you know which residents will be prepared with cand to give out.

What is a Jack O’Lantern?

Halloween decorations are a big part of this holiday and they include gourds, gravestones, skeletons and pretty much anything spooky that you can think of. One other staple of Halloween decor is the Jack O’Lantern. This is a pumpkin that has been hollowed out to that a candle can be placed inside of it. A design is carved into the front of the pumpkin so that the light can shine through. This creates a very cool looking effect and depending on your talents you can make then scary or funny. This is a fun activity that you can do with your kids in the preparation for this holiday. You can also roast the pumpkin seeds that you get out of the pumpkin as they make a really delicious snack.

You’ll need to stock up on candy!

You will need to get a big bowl of candy to hand out to any trick or treaters that come knocking at your door. Be prepared for lots of scary costumes! You don’t need to break the bank for this, a trip to the grocery store or even the dollar store is a good spot for you to pick up some affordable treats that you can hand out. It is important that you only get sealed candy. Open, homemade or loose candy is not appreciated by parents due to hygiene and safety issues. It is also advised that you don’t let your child eat any candy that is not in a sealed wrapper. You should also inspect the treats that your child gets before you let them eat any, just to be on the safe side.
