About Fredericton

Fredericton is the capital of New Brunswick with a population of 59,417. It’s the third-largest city in the province after Moncton and Saint John. Located near CFB Gagetown military base, its military history goes back over two-hundred years. The city, known for its colonial charm, is dominated by the beautiful Saint John River and is close to Grand Lake, the Fundy tides, and numerous covered bridges.

Society: Fredericton’s universities have nurtured a diverse and cosmopolitan ethnic mix including Caribbean, Chinese, Greek, Indian, Korean, Italian, Japanese, Lebanese, Mexican, Pakistani, and Vietnamese. In 2009, the federal government named Fredericton the “Cultural Capital of Canada”.

Economy: Top Fredericton industries include government services, education, health and social services, retail trade, accommodation and hospitality. The forestry, fishing, mining, quarrying, and oil and gas industries are also improving, and employment is growing strongly.

Weather: Because Fredericton is inland, it has higher summer temperatures and lower winter temperatures than coastal locations in New Brunswick. It has a semi-continental climate with a warm summer and a cold winter.

Driving: In 2007, New Brunswick opened the last 98 kilometres of the four-lane Trans-Canada Highway (Route 2) in the province. The entire 516 kilometres of highway from the Nova Scotia to the Quebec border is now a divided, four-lane highway.

Libraries: The New Brunswick Public Library Service (NBPLS) is the public library network in New Brunswick. It comprises one provincial office, 5 regional offices, 52 public libraries, 11 public-school libraries, a virtual branch, and a provincial Books-by-Mail and Talking Book Service. There are also eleven public-school libraries operated by NBPLS.

Employment: While government services provide a significant percentage of Fredericton employment, the city’s ICT business and research community are key drivers of the economy. Fredericton is the start up capital of Canada, a choice destination for talented immigrants, and the #1 micro-city in North America for business (fDI Magazine).

Health Care: New Brunswick residents entitled to universal, government-funded health care, which includes most medically required services. Many employers also offer additional coverage as part of their benefits package. There is a 90-day waiting period, so newcomers are advised to get private insurance.

Recreation: Fredericton is blessed with abundant natural beauty. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the Odell, Carleton, and Wilmot parks, while Killarney Lake offers freshwater swimming. The city boasts over 88 km of trails flanking the St. John and Nashwaak Rivers and is connected to the Greater Trans Canada Trail System. The St. John River offers unparalleled paddling, canoeing, and kayaking.

Public Transit: The City of Fredericton Public Transit service operates 28 buses on twelve routes, Monday to Saturday, from 6:15 am-11:00 pm (except holidays). Bus passes and senior passes are available.

Information on Housing

Searching online for private market housing is one way to find something to fit your budget and preferences. Most rental sites allow you to search by price, location, and number of bedrooms.

It’s also worth trying older buildings built before 1991. Unlike newer buildings, they are subject to rent control and can help you avoid unaffordable rent hikes.

Check newspapers, the bulletin boards in community centres, grocery stores, places of worship, libraries and other local businesses. You can also use websites such as:

  • Viewit.ca
  • Realtor.ca
  • Condos.ca
  • PadMapper.com
  • RentSeeker.ca
  • RentCompass.com
  • Kijiji.ca
  • Craigslist.ca
  • Apartmate
  • Bunz.com

Newcomers Facebook groups are also useful.

You can also walk around your preferred neighborhood, as landlords will post signs outside their property advertising available vacancies.
