Many newcomers to Canada find that they struggle to find work in Canada for one very frustrating reason: their English skills need improvement. This can be a little disheartening, but do not worry. The Canadian government provides newcomers to Canada with language training. By spending time and effort to improve your language skills, you’ll be in a better position to succeed in job interviews and on the job.
What is the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Program?
This is a program that is aimed at getting newcomers like us to be able to speak, write and listen well to English or French. By improving your language skills you will be able to really improve your chances of getting a job that you want in Canada.

- Newcomers and healthcare in Canada
Are these language courses for immigrants mandatory?
The LINC program is not mandatory, however, it can make a huge difference in your professional and personal life. Even if you are fairly confident with your language skills it doesn’t hurt to have a professional language instructor to sharpen your skills.
Who is eligible for the language training?

- Nova Scotia

Mastering your English skills will really help you to stand out from the crowd when you are applying to work in Canada. Many employers will see a strong command of the English language as a very positive attribute in a potential employee. Strong communication skills are required for almost every job in Canada. You may notice this the more you look at job postings and read through the required skills or experience. Even if there is no customer facing component to the role you will be expected to communicate well with your fellow colleagues.
There are also settlement services and resources that can help you prepare for job interviews so that you’re on top of your game when it comes to applying for work in Canada and performing well in your new career. Settlement agencies exist right across Canada and can help you with services such as job-specific language training for your profession.
The key thing to do is practice, practice, practice. By interacting with native English speakers you will be able to pick up on a lot of slang and expressions that are essential to understanding and responding correctly to what your coworkers and manager have to say. This won’t happen overnight, but you’ll get there in no time, so stay positive!
