newcomers to Canada find that they will struggle to find Work in Canada

Many newcomers to Canada find that they will struggle to find work in Canada for one very frustrating reason: their English skills are not good enough.  This can be a little disheartening, but do not worry.  The Canadian government provides newcomers to Canada with language training.

What is the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Program?

This is a program that is aimed at getting newcomers like us to be able to speak, write and listen well to English or French.  By improving your language skills you will be able to really improve your chances of getting a job that you want in Canada.

Are these language courses for immigrants mandatory?

The LINC program is not mandatory, however, it can make a huge difference in your professional and personal life.  Even if you are fairly confident with your language skills it doesn’t hurt to have a professional language instructor to sharpen your skills.

Who is eligible for the language training?

In order to be eligible for the language program, you must be a Canadian citizen born outside of Canada or a permanent resident of Canada, and an adult.

These programs are available in Alberta, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Yukon, British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nunavut, Quebec, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Ontario, and Saskatchewan.  Mastering your English skills will really help you to stand out from the crowd when you are applying to work in Canada.  Many employers will see a strong command of the English language as a very positive attribute in a potential employee, as communication skills are required for almost every job in Canada.  You may notice this the more you look at job postings and read through the required skills or experience, even if there is no customer facing component to the role you will be expected to communicate well with your fellow colleagues.  There are a number of resources and settlement services that can help prepare you for this and have you on the top of your game when it comes to applying for work in Canada and performing very well in your new career.

The key thing that you should do is to practice, practice, practice.  By interacting with native English speakers you will be able to pick up on a lot of slang and expressions that are essential to understanding and responding correctly to what your coworkers and manager have to say.  This won’t happen overnight, but you’ll get there in no time, so stay positive!

In addition to language training, there is a lot more that you can do to ensure that you are ready for your new life in Canada by attending Prepare for Canada’s Settlement in Canada Online Fair.

At the fair, you’ll learn all about the careers and settlement opportunities that are available by province so that you can make an informed choice on where to live.
